What is an extending dining table?

An Extending Dining Table refers to extendable or expanding tables. Such tables are usually used in small spaces where placing a larger table isn’t possible. They are also used in situations where you need to accommodate more people. These tables have extending mechanisms and additional sections that can be removed and added for various settings. With that being said let's have a look at the different types of Extending Dining Tables that exist and how they work.

What are the different types of extending tables & how can you open them?

Opening an extending table can be easy, but there are different ways for opening different extending tables. Let us have a look at the different tables and the ways they open.

1. Leaf Extension Tables: In Leaf Extension Extendable Tables, the leaves (foldable or retractable parts of the table top) are placed under the table or under the cabinet. To place the leaves between the table, you have to pull it apart and make sure that the leaves fit in the gaps of the tables. Sometimes tables have clips and hooks to hold the leaves in the proper place. Make sure that the leaves are aligned and secured perfectly. To open the leaves between the table, just pull the table up to where you wish to extend it.

2. Drop Leaf Tables: Drop Leaf Tables have hinges that can be folded down when not in use. Just by its name, we get to know that it can be folded downwards. To open the table, you just have to raise it from the dropped position and support it with hinges or the given support. Such types of drop leaf tables are used in compact places such as small houses, workplaces, and smaller restaurants.

3. Centre-Extending Dining Table: A Centre-Extending dining table extends out from the centre of the table. This splits up from between, and a panel or leaf extends from between. To open up the centre-extending dining table, there can be a sliding mechanism, pull-out mechanism, or hinged mechanism. In the sliding mechanism, gently pull the two halves, and the extension panel will come out easily. The pull-out mechanism will have levers and handles; just pull out the panel or leaf using the handle or lever. For a hinged mechanism, your table may have a lever in between so that you can easily lift and extend the dining table.

4. End Extending Dining Table: These tables have extensions at the end so that you can adjust the size of the table as per your accommodation. These tables have extending levers that can extend the panels or leaves. End extending dining tables may also have slide-out mechanisms that can slide out the extension panels or folding mechanisms so that you can easily fold the panels in. For pull-out extensions, you just need to pull out the extending panel.

5. Flip-Top Extending Dining Table: A Flip-Top extending table has a mechanism where the top flips up to extend the table. These tables mostly have hinges or locks. Most tables have hinges at the central point that allow the top to flip up. For locks and latches, make sure they are unlocked to extend the panel; in the case of a hinge, make sure the mechanisms are proper so that you can lift the hinge and extend the table.

6. Butterfly Extending Dining Table: Butterfly extending tables are designed with central leaves that open and unfold just like butterfly wings. Some butterfly tables have locking mechanisms or catches that help you pull the leaf out and extend the table. If there are any kind of locks, make sure that you unlock them first and then open them. These locks can be located on the underside of the tables. Also, if there is any kind of mechanism after opening it, make sure you secure it so that your panel or leaf is secured at the level of the table.

Each table has different uses and functionality, so you can choose the table based on your personal preferences.

How to close the extending dining table?

There are many ways to close an extending table; all that depends on the type of extending table you have. Each has its way of opening and closing; let us have a look at them.

1. Leaf Extending Dining Table: You can remove its panels or leaves if they are detachable, but if the table has an adjusting mechanism, then set it back to the closing position. After closing the table, make sure that the locking mechanisms are locked and in the required position.

2. Drop Leaf Dining Table: Arrange to give the leaves to close the drop leaf table; just fold it down to its closed position. Also, you should ensure that the mechanisms of the closed leaves are properly supported.

3. Centre-Extending Dining Table: To close up a centre-extending table, ensure that you have no items on the extension and leaf panel. If your centre-extending table has a detachable leaf, then you can remove the leaf by carefully separating the centre section and storing it separately. If it has a folding mechanism, then fold the leaf or slide it back into the storing position.

4. End Extending Dining Table: To close the extending panels, you can remove them if they are detachable, or if it has a folding mechanism, then you can align the panels or leaves in the storing position. Ensure that the panels are placed in proper alignment and locked in the storage order.

5. Flip Top Extending Dining Table: If there are additional legs or support, make sure they are unlocked. Gently lower the table top back down to its original position. Ensure it aligns properly with the base. Also, if there are any locks, make sure that after closing it in the aligned closed manner, you lock the latches so that the table is intact in its position.

6. Butterfly Leaf Extending Table: Ensure that there are no items placed on the top of the leaf panel. If there are any securing mechanisms to hold the leaf in the unfolded position, then unlock them and make sure that they are back in the storing and closed position. After pushing it inside, make sure that you lock the leaf in the secured position. Make sure that the table is stable and the leaf is locked properly in its position.

Which dining tables are better: extendable or non-extendable?

Whether an extending or non-extending dining table is a good option depends on your personal choice and need. Let us have a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the extendable and non-extending dining table.

Extendable dining table:

Advantages: Extendable tables are the best option for your house if you have many people to accommodate or if you host gatherings often and need a big table but don’t want to waste your space on a bigger dining table. Also, you can save your money rather than investing in a bigger dining table by going for an extended dining table.

Disadvantages: Extendable dining tables can be a bit complex to manage; also, they can require some extra space for extension panels. You also have to look after the maintenance because it has a different mechanism than a normal dining table.

Non-extending dining table:

Advantages: They have a simpler design, and there is no problem with maintenance as there are no extra panels attached to them.

Disadvantages: There is limited space to accommodate people. They may not be ideal for smaller spaces and also for people who wish to adjust the size of their table frequently.

So, to get a perfect dining table for yourself, you should check all your needs such as cost, space, number of people accommodating, size, and design.
